Teen Patti Hand Rankings with Examples

By Teen Patti Guide · Updated 2026-10-09

Learn all six hand categories and compare pairs, colours and high-card hands correctly.

Strongest to weakest

The common category order is trail, pure sequence, sequence, colour, pair, then high card. Category comes before individual card rank. These examples assume no wild cards.

1. Trail or trio

Three cards of the same rank form a trail. For example, 9♠ 9♥ 9♦ is a trail. Compare the repeated rank when both hands are trails. Do not classify this hand as an ordinary pair: all three matching cards matter.

2. Pure sequence

Three consecutive ranks in one suit form a pure sequence. An example is 8♥ 9♥ 10♥. Check the table’s ace convention before comparing ace-containing runs. Some versions place A-2-3 above A-K-Q; others reverse those two.

3. Sequence

Three consecutive ranks in mixed suits form a sequence. For example, 8♥ 9♣ 10♦. The cards need not be dealt in numerical order; sort them mentally before checking. K-A-2 is not a standard consecutive run.

4. Colour

Three cards in one suit that do not make a pure sequence form a colour. Example: K♣ 8♣ 4♣. Against another colour, compare the highest rank, then the middle, then the lowest if necessary.

5. Pair

Two cards of the same rank plus a different card form a pair. Example: J♠ J♦ 6♣. Compare the paired rank first. If that matches, compare the remaining card, often called the kicker.

6. High card

A hand that fits none of the earlier categories is a high-card hand. Example: Q♠ 9♥ 3♣. Compare ranks from highest downward.

Worked comparison

Q♠ Q♦ 2♥ beats J♣ J♥ A♦ because queens form the higher pair. The ace in the second hand does not override the paired rank. By contrast, Q♠ Q♦ 8♥ beats Q♣ Q♥ 2♦ because equal pairs are decided by the kicker.

This guide describes a common version of play. Confirm house rules before starting.
